Founder of Taiao Photography

Hello, I'm Dan the creator and photographer behind Taiao Photography. My journey to photography has been shaped by my time in the British Army, a deep love for nature, and a profound connection to the land. The name Taiao means "world," "Earth," "natural world," "environment," in Māori. It represents a deep belief that humans are intrinsically connected to the land and the natural world—a philosophy that resonates deeply with my approach to both photography and life.

A Journey in the British Army

I began my career in the British Army on the 3rd of April, 2017, as a telecoms engineer and physical training instructor. My nearly 8 years of service allowed me to travel multiple countries from the Middle East to Europe, where I forged strong bonds with incredible people. The experience not only built my resilience and discipline but also provided me with a unique perspective on the world.

While serving in the military, I discovered a newfound passion for photography—a hobby that would soon take on a far more significant role in my life. It was during this time that I met my beautiful fiancée, Aimee, who would go on to turn my world upside down for the better. From the moment we met, I knew my life was about to change in the most profound way. With Aimee by my side, I left the British Army and followed my heart into the world of photography.

Taiao Photography: A Connection to Nature

The name Taiao Photography reflects the deep connection I feel with the natural world. Growing up, I always had a desire to protect and appreciate the land and environment around me. The Māori concept of Taiao perfectly embodies my philosophy of photography: we are all deeply connected to the world we inhabit, and through my lens, I hope to share the beauty of that world with others. My work is not just about capturing stunning images—it's about telling the story of our environment, the creatures that inhabit it, and the vital importance of conservation.

Self-Taught, But Always Learning

I’m proud to say that I’m a completely self-taught photographer. What began as a simple hobby began to blossom into a career prospect thanks to countless hours of practice, experimentation, and self-reflection. While I’ve primarily learned through hands-on experience, I also sought out workshops to deepen my knowledge and understanding of the technical side of photography, particularly in the manipulation light and shadow to create impactful images.

A Passion for Wildlife and Storytelling

Photography became more than just an artistic outlet for me, It was a way for me to channel my emotions and creativity during a difficult time of healing, and it soon evolved into a mission: to capture and share images that could positively impact the world. I realized I had a unique ability to notice the world’s small, often-overlooked wonders and I fell in love with the idea of using photography to positively impact others.

With a deep love for wildlife and conservation, I strive to tell the stories of the ones who cannot speak for themselves. My passion for conservation and nature drives my work, and I hope to inspire others to see the world differently, to appreciate its beauty, and to protect it for future generations. Through my work, I want to inspire others to appreciate and protect the natural world, encouraging a stronger, more profound connection to the Earth we share.

Overcoming Adversity

Like many, my journey hasn’t been without its struggles. About four years into my military career, I faced a severe mental health crisis that nearly derailed my life. It was the discovery of photography that helped pull me through, offering me an outlet for expression and a new sense of purpose. It saved my life, and for that reason, it means so much more than just a career to me, it is a source of healing, growth, and connection. During that time, photography became my lifeline—it helped me process my emotions and reframe my perspective on life. This healing power is one of the reasons I am so passionate about my work today. Photography saved my life, and it is my hope that through my images, I can help others see the world in a new, more positive light, and perhaps even offer them a form of healing in the process.

Looking Ahead

With Taiao Photography, I continue to follow my mission of creating meaningful, impactful images that tell the stories of our world with a goal that contributes to a positive and meaningful legacy. My work is driven by the belief that photography can be a force for good. One that connects people to nature, inspires change, and offers hope for the future. As I continue to grow alongside Aimee, my fiancée and life partner, I am excited about what lies ahead, both personally and professionally.

Through Taiao Photography, I invite you to see the world through my eyes, to witness the beauty, the power, and the fragility of our planet and its inhabitants.
